A healthy diet is one that helps maintain or improve health. It is important for the prevention of many chronic diseases such as: obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.


A healthy diet involves consuming appropriate amounts of all nutrients, and an adequate amount of water. Nutrients can be obtained from many different foods, so there are a wide variety of diets that may be considered healthy diets.


There is a growing appreciation of the role of diet in determining our level of health. It is now established that certain dietary practices can cause or prevent a wide range of diseases. In addition, research increasingly indicates that certain diets and foods offer immediate therapeutic benefit.

  1. Try to eat a plant based, predominantly vegetarian diet
  2. Reduce the intake of fat
  3. Eliminate the intake of refined sugar
  4. Reduce exposure to herbicides and pesticides
  5. Eliminate the intake of food additives and colouring agents
  6. Keep salt intake low and potassium intake high
  7. Drink 1.5-2L water daily
  8. Identify and address food allergies
  9. Determine caloric needs to achieve or maintain ideal body weight
  10. Use the healthy exchange system to construct a health-promoting diet
